What is Influenza???

The CDC defines influenza as “a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness.” I feel like as a parent, nurse, and health conscience person, it is important to know what influenza is, how we can help prevent it, and how to care for it if we get it. So many times I hear people saying they got the “flu” with vomiting and diarrhea and they even got the flu shot, but still got it.  I think it is important for people to understand the “stomach flu” and the “Influenza Virus” are not the same thing.  Influenza Virus is a respiratory flu. The CDC has so many great resources on Influenza for you.

That said, we are big believers here on prevention of illness in our house, my family may even call me the “Clean Freak” at times, but I would much rather be that than have to deal with all the illness all the time.  Being sick can interfere so much with our daily life, that I think the best place to start is prevention.  I know it is inevitable, we will catch viruses, etc but with prevention and education we can get through this flu season as strong as possible.  Here is some simple prevention steps you can take at home:
  • Wash Hands-ALL the time, especially after using restroom, before eating, and after playing outside.
  • Keep Hands away from mouth and face.
  • Disinfect Surfaces-this includes but not limited too, eating surfaces, bathrooms, etc.
  • Cover your mouth with cough/sneeze.
  • Get Plenty of Rest.
  • Drink Plenty of Fluids.
  • Eat a Well Balanced Diet
  • Flu Vaccination
